

General Motors is seeking experienced and qualified Mechanical Journeypersons (Pipefitters) to join our skilled trades team. In this critical role, you will work with minimal supervision and apply strong independent judgment to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex piping and mechanical systems. Your contributions will support the operation and reliability of production and facility systems essential to GM’s success. Primary Function:
The Pipefitter is responsible for the layout, fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of piping systems that support hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical equipment within the plant. The role requires the ability to interpret technical schematics, operate precision tools and machines, and ensure all systems function safely and efficiently.
Tools and Equipment Used:

Hand and power tools (wrenches, pipe threaders, grinders, saws)

Pipe threading, bending, grooving, soldering, and welding equipment

CNC and conventional machine tools (lathes, milling machines, grinders)

Measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, gauge blocks)
-
Mobile equipment (forklifts, cranes, vertical lifts)
-
PPE (gloves, goggles, helmets, etc.)
Materials Handled:
-
Steel, copper, stainless steel, and plastic piping
-
Hydraulic and pneumatic hoses
-
Valves, pumps, motors, and mechanical seals
-
Coolants, lubricants, filters, and gaskets
-
Combustion equipment components
Key Responsibilities:
-
Follow OSHA and GM safety protocols at all times
-
Layout, fabricate, and assemble piping systems for hydraulic, pneumatic, and water systems

Maintain, dismantle, repair, and replace mechanical and hydraulic components on industrial machinery

Use hand and machine tools to cut, shape, and install piping systems and fittings
-
Read and interpret mechanical blueprints and technical drawings
-
Operate and rig mobile equipment and lifting tools as needed
-
Set up and operate CNC and manual machines for part fabrication
-
Fabricate tools and components to precise specifications
-
Perform inspections using precision measuring instruments to ensure adherence to specifications
-
Support predictive and preventive maintenance programs
-
Collaborate with other skilled trades and engineering teams

Minimum Qualifications:
-
U.S. Department of Labor Certificate of Completion in Pipefitting or a minimum of six (6) years of related experience

18 years of age or older
-
Eligible to work in the United States without GM-supplied immigration sponsorship

Ability to pass drug screening, background check, and pre-employment assessment
-
Flexibility to work any shift, including overtime, weekends, and holidays on short notice
Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand, bend, kneel, twist, and reach for extended periods

Lift or carry materials up to 50 lbs.

Operate mobile equipment

Respond quickly to safety alarms and wear PPE consistently

Work in busy and sometimes confined environments
